Tara P. Bobart qualified in the 1960s as a Geologist with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) Degree in Geology from London University in the UK and on returning home after teaching for a while, soon realized her love for teaching and sharing her knowledge with others. This led her to pursue a Bachelor of Education Degree at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Canada.
It was while on a practice teaching assignment that her organised teaching talents were observed and recognised, landing her an irresistible offer to introduce and establish a Department of Geology as well as to teach this Earth Science in Nova Scotia. This she was able to successfully accomplish and enjoy until returning to Trinidad in the early 1970s.
As fate would have it, and to her utter delight, Tara was again invited to establish a Department of Geology and to teach it, this time at Queen’s Royal College in Port of Spain. Several years later, Tara left teaching temporarily, so as to concentrate her efforts towards her young family. It was during this hiatus, that Tara was able to find a most satisfying balance between the challenges of family life and the survival and nourishment of the soul.
This she achieved by practicing the sugar crafting skills which were imparted to her as a girl by her own very talented mother. In the 1980s, Tara attended the Wilton Academy of Confectionery and Cake Decorating in Chicago USA, where she excelled and graduated at the advanced level. In her spare time, Tara, experimented, developed and perfected her own techniques in sugar artistry while working in this field at home and in the UK.
To date, forty four of her Wedding Cake designs have been published internationally, in Britain’s most prestigious Wedding Cake Magazine as well as in Australia and the USA, featuring alongside the work of some of the world’s top sugar artists.
After more than twenty five years and still counting, this Sugar Artist and Wedding Cake Designer continues to enjoy teaching and sharing her knowledge and skills with others by conducting classes in Sugar Artistry and Cake Decorating at all levels.
Eight years ago while adding the finishing touches to one of her sugar floral bouquets by brushing them with special edible coloured powders, it occurred to her that if she could paint so beautifully on sugar, surely she should be able to paint as well on canvas! Needless to say, the thought triggered her to start experimenting with acrylics, water colours and oils and soon she realised that she was hooked.
In 2004, while a student at The Alliance Française, Tara had already completed more than thirty six paintings and was invited by the management of the Alliance Française to have them host an exhibition of her work. The success of that exhibition served to reinforce her love for painting which has become not only her favourite hobby but also a great source of inspiration and relaxation.
At present, this multi media artist derives immense pleasure and excitement from painting with oils, primarily for the fun of it whether landscapes, seascapes, or whatever takes her fancy and she derives a special sense of accomplishment and gratitude whenever one of her paintings is sufficiently loved and appreciated, and finds a new home.
